Desktop for coding Reddit

I'm just curious as to what pc specs would be best for programming and why. Of course and ssd would be ideal and a high end processor with a good amount of RAM.

But are more cores preferred over single core performance, amd vs Intel, cas or frequency of the RAM?

Edit: I was thinking specifically programming in Java, Perl, or R (the languages I have experience with)

Thanks

The use of desktops are decreasing day by day in daily life but for coding purposes are there any reasons for using a desktop over a laptop?

It's almost time to replace our 6 year old dev computers. I've got some thoughts on what to replace them with, but wondered what other people felt was important.

Currently we went with desktops, which are faster and cheaper than laptops. If we work from home we just remote desktop into our machines from our home PC's. This works for us, but what are people's thoughts on desktops vs laptops? Obviously with a dock at the office.

We do windows development, visual studio, Sql server etc. We're also getting into mobile development so running mobile emulators is becoming more common.

I don't really know what to suggest for a CPU, maybe something with integrated graphics so we don't need a video card.

Memory I'm leaning towards mor is better, possibly up to 32gb, with 16 being the minimum.

So anyway, anyone got some suggestions based on experience?

Hey guys, so I am thinking of building myself a PC only and only for Programming purposes (and maybe some mild gaming)

But in my country all the GPU prices (even 2nd hand) are just really really big!!!

So I was thinking of a Ryzen 5 3400GE APU or Ryzen 3 3100/5 2600 with RX 550 2GB.

If you are a programmer could you tell me which one should I choose and why? Currently I own a laptop with i5-6200u, but the speed is really really really slow.

Also planning on having 2* 8GB 3200MHz RAM for the build.

Thanks for answering!

Decided it's time to replace my i5 3470 4 GB ram pc after a few good years.

I am a student now and need to buy a new computer, Got a suggestion from the store to buy this build. Since I am not an expert on hardware would love to hear some opinions.

The build:

CPU: Intel i7 8700

RAM: HyperX FURY Black 2x8GB DDR4 2400MHz CL15 Kit

Motherboard : Asus PRIME Z390M-PLUS

SSD: Sandisk Plus SDSSDA-240G-G26 240GB SSD SATA III

Cooler: Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler

Case: Antec NX100 ATX

This sets me back about 1050$(Including a windows 10 installation from them). I can get the 9700k for an extra 120$ but I think that may be too much. My main use will be coding and doing assignments. Should I get something cheaper? Should I downgrade the CPU for more RAM? any help, ideas or opinions will be apperciated, thank you.

<----UPDATE---->

My main use will probably be coding in JAVA and I might need decent ram to use IDE like eclipse and multitasking with chrome tabs open

Based on the comments here I guess spending 1000$ is too excessive I think I am going to stay with my current PC and do a few upgrades

Upgrading from 4 GB ram to 8 GB

Switching from Hard Drive to SSD

Upgrading windows 7 32 bit to windows 10 64 bit

This will probably cost me about 150$ and may be sufficent for at least another year or more untill I will need a heavy duty PC.

Between a laptop and a desktop, which one do you prefer for programming? from learnprogramming

I am studying for software engineering and I would like to build myself a PC. My budget is around 5000 thousand dollars and I wanted to ask which components would you recommend (motherboard, cpu, ram, gpu and etc.)?

I'm working on building a PC so I can start learning how to code. I have a build in mind but am fairly new to the pc game. I was hoping if I could get recommendations on how to either upgrade performance or choose other quality items at a reduced price. I do really like my choice in CPU and tower but my heart really is not set on anything else. I'm not looking into getting a video card because the Ryzen comes with pretty good integrated graphics as far as I've seen. I would ideally like to use the pc for gaming at some point which is why I'm looking at getting a 750w power supply but I'm trying to stay under $1300ish for the build as of right now. The Ryzen also comes with the wraith stealth cpu cooler so I don't think I'll need a different cpu cooler. I know I'd need some case fans, keyboard and mouse as well but I haven't quite looked that far yet.

Any recommendations would be very appreciated 😊

Thank you!
