Is Apple coming out with a new iMac in 2023?

Apple has a jam-packed slate of products prepared for 2023, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman predicted over the weekend. In his latest Power On newsletter, the Apple-focused journalist says Apple is readying a slew of new hardware, including a 15-inch version of the MacBook Air, an M3 iMac, and a new Mac Pro, 9to5Mac reported Sunday.

"Next year should be pretty jam-packed for Apple. Look for a 15-inch MacBook Air, new M3 iMac, the Mac Pro, updated HomePod, Reality Pro headset and a larger iPad," Gurman wrote. "There's also the potential debut of the company's combined Apple TV, HomePod and FaceTime camera device coming at the tail end of the year."

Gurman also suggested that Apple might skip the rumored October event focused on Macs and iPads, as previously reported by Digital Trends, since its remaining 2022 updates aren't enough to warrant a full show.

The 2022 MacBook Air was released in June and featured the first complete redesign of the series since its initial release in 2008. The MacBook Air currently only comes in a 13-inch model, though Apple sold an 11-inch version until 2016. A 15-inch MacBook Air would be Apple's only laptop of that size, since its MacBook Pro lineup offers screen sizes of 13-, 14-and 16-inches.

The current iMac was released in 2021 and features an M1 chip, while the Mac Pro is the only piece of Apple's hardware that has yet to see an upgrade to Apple's own silicone. The current version of Apple's powerful desktop runs on Intel processors and hasn't seen an update since late 2019.

Apple's smart home device, the HomePod, also hasn't been touched in a while. The company released a HomePod Mini in 2020, but the larger HomePod hasn't been refreshed since 2018.

Though new iPads are expected to be announced next month, Gurman also says we could be in store for an even larger model next year, though he doesn't specify which model will receive the new size, nor does he mention exactly how large the screen will get.

While Gurman's predictions include upgrades on old devices, he also expect to see new products debut.

There have been rumors about Apple's Reality Pro headset for a while now, and it appears that the virtual reality device might make its debut in 2023.

Lastly, a combined Apple TV, HomePod and FaceTime camera product appears to be a portable smart home device with a screen for watching TV and taking FaceTime calls, in the vein of an Amazon's Echo Show

  • A New iMac May Not Be Launched Until The M3 Chip Is Ready

Fans of the iMac line expect Apple to announce new models in 2022, but fresh details reveal it won't come until 2023, powered by a new chip.

The Apple iMac won't get an upgrade until 2023

The iMac is Apple's All-in-One desktop computer, and while folks expect a successor to arrive soon, that may not be the case. However, a new model with a brand new Apple chip is reportedly scheduled for 2023. In 2021, Apple launched a new 24-inch iMac powered by the Apple M1 chip. The new chip wasn't the only change about the new desktop computer.

Apple had also redesigned the iMac, giving it a makeover and releasing it in fun and attractive colors. However, not everyone finds the new iMac to be the right choice for them, as some folks find the display too small. For this category of users, one of the options available for them is to get the Apple Studio Display which has a 27-inch 5K display, and hook it up to a Mac mini or Mac Studio, which has an M1 and M1 Max/Ultra chip respectively.

Apple just took the wraps off the new Apple M2 processor, which is already available inside the new 2022 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. While the chip is expected to appear in more devices soon, including new iPad Pro models scheduled for release later in 2022, the iMac may likely not get the new chip. Apple is already developing the next-gen silicon, which should launch as the Apple M3. And according to details revealed by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his latest newsletter, the Apple M3 chip will power a new iMac expected to arrive in 2023.

No New iMac(s) For 2022

The new iMac is said to have the model number "J433," but there is no mention of its size or display technology. With a new iMac planned for 2023 featuring a more powerful chip, it is understandable if Apple doesn't intend to launch a new iMac powered by the M2 processor. Back in April, 9to5Mac reported on a handful of new Macs that will feature the M2 chip, and that list didn't include a new iMac. In addition, an earlier report in March 2022 disclosed that the rumored larger iMac with a 27-inch screen driven by the more powerful M1 Max, M1 Pro, or M1 Ultra didn't appear in Apple's roadmap. Thus hinting at the device being shelved.

Based on these details, a new iMac isn't expected to be announced in 2022. However, those who want a more powerful desktop Mac may have to wait for the rumored Mac Mini with an M2 chip or a Mac Pro with a successor to the M1 Ultra. In addition to the iMac, Mark Gurman also revealed that the Apple A3 chip will power a new 13-inch MacBook Air codenamed "J513," a 15-inch MacBook Air with the codename "J515," and is likely also to be the same chip inside the new 12-inch computer Apple is said to be developing.
