For nearly 50 years, New York was the semi-permanent home of the N.F.L. draft. But since the league decided to turn its marquee off-season event into a traveling roadshow in 2015, it has been staged in six different host cities, including this year in Las Vegas. Next up, in 2023: Kansas City, Mo.

Next year’s event, which will be held from April 27 to 29, is expected to be set up in downtown Kansas City, around Union Station and the National World War I Museum and Memorial. Kansas City’s bid to host the event was selected in a vote by club owners three years ago.

By taking the draft on the road and holding it outdoors or in stadium venues, the event draws significantly larger crowds than was possible at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. The league reported the last prepandemic draft, in Nashville, drew 600,000 fans over three days.

The N.F.L. has since opened up its other major off-season event, the scouting combine, to a bidding process; in May, team owners will vote on bids from Indianapolis, Dallas and Los Angeles to host the combine in 2023 and 2024.

It is never too early to start thinking about next year's NFL Draft, even if the 2022 NFL Draft is far from over. Next year's draft is scheduled to be held in Kansas City, Missouri. The Draft will take place between April 27 and April 29 in the home of the Kansas City Chiefs.

This is the first time the Chiefs will be hosting the event. The action will take place primarily at Kansas City's Union Station and World War I Museum and Memorial.

Kathy Nelson, President and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission, said:

"This will be one of the biggest and most-anticipated professional sporting events our city has hosted. Not only will fans from around the country be traveling to experience the NFL Draft and NFL Draft Experience, but millions of viewers will see Kansas City in the national spotlight ..."

For those moving on to the next Draft, requests for priority access are already up for Kansas City's major event.

The website says priority access features "the best seats to watch the action unfold, hospitality with elevated tailgate fare, beer and wine, NFL player appearances, the chance for behind-the-scenes tours and more, your trip to the 2023 NFL Draft will be memorable for years to come."

Kansas City could be revamping the city in time for the Draft, with plans for an entertainment district.

Erik Wullschleger, who is with 3D Development on the project, said the district would have volleyball courts, big screen TVs, yard games, shops, food and a 170-foot Ferris Wheel. The goal would be in part to bring more people into downtown Kansas City when the Draft comes to town.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Officials from the National Football League and the Kansas City Sports Commission provided an update Thursday as the city gets ready to host the 2023 NFL Draft next April.

John Barker, senior vice president of global event operations and production at the NFL, spoke to the members of the Kansas City, Missouri, City Council Thursday.

“Kansas City, you are now on the clock,” Barker said. “You are up next.”

Barker was joined by Kansas City Sports Commission President Kathy Nelson.

The pair outlined a preliminary site plan for the draft, which will be focused on Union Station and the National World War I Museum and Memorial.

The three-day event will feature a main stage in front of Union Station, though the station itself will remain front and center.

“We are unbelievably excited about this,” Barker said. “This one has all the markings of being special.”

In addition to the main stage, organizers are planning a Draft Experience that would be hosted on the giant grassy lawns on both the north and south sides of the Liberty Memorial.
