When can you order 2023 Chevy Colorado?

This article was updated on 8/2/2022 for clarity with the latest vehicle information.

GM announced on social media that the next generation of the Chevy Colorado midsize truck is on the horizon. Here is everything we know so far about the brand new 2023 Chevy Colorado redesign.

Will there be a 2023 Colorado?

While General Motors has not announced an actual release date of when 2023 Chevy Colorado trucks will arrive in dealer showrooms, the truck did make its debut on July 28th, 2022.

Additionally, in a recent press release, the automaker said, “Production for the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado begins in the first half of 2023 at General Motors’ Wentzville, Missouri, assembly facility. Pricing and additional details will be released closer to the start of production.”

Is the Chevy Colorado getting a redesign?

Yes, the Chevy Colorado is being redesigned. For the next generation of this midsize truck from General Motors, the most drastic change is in the exterior and interior styling, reports Car and Driver. The current Chevy Colorado is nearly 10 years old, having debuted at the LA Auto Show in November 2013. While the current truck received a facelift in 2021, it is not much more than a redesigned front fascia.

In a teaser video posted to GM’s social media outlets, we can see glimpses of a planned safari bar. We can also see an aggressive front fascia with headlights similar in style to the Chevy Blazer. The back end of the truck looks similar to the styling found on the full-size Chevy Silverado’s taillights and tailgate.

According to Chevrolet, “Designers and engineers focused on three key categories to take the Colorado to the next level: elevated design, enhanced performance, and new and useful technology. Each category weaves into a streamlined lineup built around a single wheelbase and single cab configuration to create a unified Colorado pickup family.”

Trims and models

The 2023 Chevy Colorado will be offered in Work Truck (WT), LT, Z71, ZR2, and Trail Boss models. Additionally, the 2023 Colorado will be available with a long list of both on- and off-road accessories. These truck accessories will be available for any trim.

What engine is in the 2023 Colorado?

As part of the Chevrolet Colorado redesign, the automaker introduced a 2.7-liter turbo engine. The engine will power all five Colorado models. However, horsepower ranges depending on which model you choose. Opt for the WT or LT, and the truck’s 2.7-liter turbo engine makes 237 horsepower. Upgrade to the Z71 or Trailboss models, and you can expect to find a 310-horsepower 2.7-liter turbo plus engine under the hood. Meanwhile, opting for the ZR2 gets you a 2.7-liter turbo high-output engine with 310 horsepower.

“A second-generation eight-speed automatic transmission complements the new engine, with refinements designed to offer smoother shifting and quicker downshifts for a feeling of greater comfort and power on demand. It also excels in low-speed mobility, particularly in off-road scenarios,” Chevrolet added.

Price: We expect the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado will have a starting price of approximately $28,000 when it goes on sale in the first half of 2023. The range-topping Colorado ZR2 is expected to have a price tag of roughly $45,000.

The Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup truck gets completely redesigned inside and out for the 2023 model year. Pitched against rivals like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and the Nissan Frontier, this generation of Colorado has a bolder exterior to go along with a completely redone cabin. It will be available in five trim levels: Work Truck (W/T), LT, Z71, ZR2, and Trail Boss.

When it comes to what’s under the hood, the choice is relatively straightforward. A 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is the sole engine option, though it comes in three distinct states of tune depending on the chosen model. An 8-speed automatic is standard across the board, and Colorado customers can choose between rear- and four-wheel drive.

Stepping inside, the interior change that’s immediately apparent is a standard 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that’s positioned in the center of the dashboard. Look for a full complement of smartphone connectivity, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, to also come as standard equipment.

In our previous experience with the 2022 Colorado, we’d noted the truck’s so-so interior quality and cramped rear seat in extended cab format.  The 2023 Colorado’s extra interior tech and modernized cabin will definitely boost the Colorado’s usability and appeal. Helping matters, particularly for tall people seated in the second row, is the fact that the Colorado is now only available in roomier crew cab configuration with a 5-foot cargo bed.

Gone is the previous Colorado’s extended cab layout, which we criticized as being too constricting. It also rides on a wheelbase that’s 3.1 inches longer than the one used in the outgoing Colorado.

The Colorado also comes with an array of improvements to make it safer, not to mention more capable during off-road driving. Standard active safety features such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, front pedestrian detection, and automatic high-beam headlights make this Chevy more competitive with rival midsize trucks. Blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view parking camera, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear pedestrian detection are optional.

For those interested in pickup adventures on unpaved surfaces, the redesigned front of the Colorado has a shorter front overhang that improves its approach angle. The ZR2 and Trail Boss trims get factory-installed lift kits to aid in navigating rugged terrain, plus wider fender flares, underbody skidplates, upgraded dampers, and chunky all-terrain tires.

Up to five available drive modes are at the ready for a wide range of driving needs. Depending on the trim, the driver-selectable modes are Normal, Tow/Haul, Off-Road, Terrain, and Baja. The latter two are geared towards low-speed rock crawling and high-speed dune driving.

For the ultimate in desert driving, Chevrolet is offering the special-edition ZR2 Desert Boss model. It’s fitted with a roof-mounted light bar, off-road bumper, underbody camera, beadlock-capable tires, and a rollover bar mounted behind the cabin.

2023 Chevrolet Colorado Regular Cab Pricing

We expect the base 2023 Chevrolet Colorado Work Truck (W/T) will have a starting price of around $28,000. That’s slightly more than the lowest price trim of the outgoing Colorado, though still highly competitive with competitors like the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger.

The sweet spot of the 2023 Colorado range will likely be the Z71 trim. This comes with features like upgraded seating surfaces, LED lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, and the more powerful version of the 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that delivers 310 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque.

At the top of the Colorado lineup, the ZR2 with its even more potent turbo 4-cylinder and extra all-terrain addendum should carry an asking price of approximately $45,000.

Engine & Transmission

The new Colorado will be powered by three versions of the same 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine found in its full-size Silverado sibling. Each is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The higher up you go with the five available trims, the more horsepower and torque are at your disposal.

While Chevrolet eliminated the three available engines offered on the previous Colorado, including a fuel-efficient turbodiesel and powerful V6, the two higher tunes of this turbo 4-cylinder produce more horsepower and torque than the 3.6-liter V6 used before. Maximum towing capacity actually increases in the 2023 Colorado, from 7,000 pounds upward to 7,700 pounds.

2.7L Turbo

  • Standard on WT & LT trims
  • 237 horsepower
  • 259 lb-ft of torque
  • Max towing: 3,500 lbs.

2.7L Turbo Plus

  • Standard on Z71 & Trail Boss, Available on WT & LT
  • 310 horsepower
  • 390 lb-ft of torque
  • Max towing: 7,700 lbs.

2.7L Turbo High-Output

  • Standard on ZR2
  • 310 horsepower
  • 430 lb-ft of torque
  • Max towing: 7,700 lbs.

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.
