The 2023 Ford Bronco Heritage and Heritage Limited editions are a nostalgia play. Andrew Wendler

The return of the Ford Bronco has been nothing if not a nostalgia play. Sure, it telegraphs the original and looks good doing it, but—and this is crucial—it’s also a genuine off-road beast. Still, with all the classic mid-century styling and colors that populate its legacy, Ford would be foolish not to lean into it. And that’s where the 2023 Ford Bronco Heritage and Heritage Limited editions come in.

Available on both the Bronco and Bronco Sport, the Heritage packages consist of a collection of retro colors, exterior tweaks, interior bits and upholstery blended with specially curated existing factory hardware. In addition, the Bronco Heritage Limited series offers a more exclusive take on the formula and will be limited to a production run of just 1966 models in a nod to the original 1966 Bronco that inspires them.

Bronco Two- and Four-Door Heritage Models

The Bronco Heritage Edition models are built on the Big Bend trim level and equipped with the desirable Sasquatch Package. Five distinct two-tone paint options are on offer, including Black, Race Red, Cactus Gray, Carbonized Gray and Azure Gray. Regardless of the body color, it’s impossible to miss the Oxford White accents, particularly the defining modular hardtop roof. Oxford White extends to the grille accented with “FORD” lettering in Race Red. The powder-coated steel front bumper with built-in recovery points and integrated fog lamps is standard.

The 17-inch “steelie-look” wheels are cast aluminum, which seems kind of redundant, but also makes sense when you consider the throwback objective here. Finally, a bodyside stripe, again in Oxford White, puts the finishing touch on the treatment.

Interior bits include plaid cloth seats delightful enough they deserve a spot in the regular options list, that Oxford White instrument panel, Heritage front and rear floor liners and center console badging.

The Big Bend trim it’s built on includes the High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension (HOSS) 2.0 system with long-travel Bilstein dampers, an increased ride height, standard 35-inch Goodyear mud-terrain tires and Dana front and rear electronic locking axles with 4.7:1 final drive ratio. Sasquatch-width fender flares cover the big tires and their nearly 2-inch wider track compared to a standard Bronco.

Power for the Heritage Edition is provided by the Bronco’s base 300-horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine mated to a seven-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.

Bronco Heritage Limited Edition

Offered only as a four-door, the Bronco Heritage Limited Edition is limited to 1,966 units in a not-so-subtle nod to the 1966 Bronco that started the whole thing. It launches exclusively in Robins Egg Blue, a hue mixed up to pay respect to the Arcadian Blue finish available on the original 1966 Bronco. Yellowstone Metallic (as pictured), based on the 1971 Ford color Prairie Yellow, is planned for late 2023 model year availability, with Peak Blue earmarked for the 2024 model year.

Interior bits include leather-trimmed with vinyl insert plaid seats with white and red accent stitching and the requisite Heritage Limited console badging.

Though its overall design follows that of the regular Heritage, the Heritage Limited gets a major upgrade in the logo department with a genuine “Bronco” script emblem on its flanks. The wheels, too, get special treatment with the gloss black-painted 17-inch classic “dog dish” design ringed in Oxford White.

In addition to the Badlands standard kit, the Heritage Limited Edition models get the larger 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine good for up to 330 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Bronco Sport Heritage Edition and Heritage Limited

Does it matter if Bronco Sport wasn’t around for the Bronco’s salad days? It’s still a worthy vehicle, and as we’ve experienced first-hand, it’s mighty capable as long as you don’t expect the stilt-like ground clearance of its full-size brother with the Sasquatch package.

The Bronco Sport Heritage also leads with the two-tone paint theme, available in seven paint colors, including Alto Blue, Atlas Blue, Cactus Grey, Carbonized Gray, Hot Pepper Red, Robins Egg Blue and Shadow Black, all with the trademark Oxford White roof, grille, 17-inch wheels and body stripe.

Also built on the Big Bend trim, the 2023 Bronco Sport Heritage Edition counts on the 1.5-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine for 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Terrain Management System offers five G.O.A.T. drive modes, including Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery and Sand.

The Big Bend specification brings an increased ride height, beefed-up dampers all around, unique spring tuning and anti-roll bars.

Aside from the metal “Bronco Sport” script logo (pictured) and leather-trimmed interior, it can be difficult to tell the Heritage from Heritage Limited. The latter also gets the bigger 2.0-liter engine and is limited to 1,966 units. Andrew Wendler

Bronco Sport Heritage Limited Edition models get an impeccably rendered metal “Bronco” script front fender badging; and larger 29-inch all-terrain off-road tires with a more aggressive tread pattern. Power comes from a larger 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with up to 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque.  for high-speed off-road performance.

Interior details include leather-trimmed seats, Oxford White door inserts and unique center console badging.

As with the big Bronco, the production of the 2023 Bronco Sport Heritage Limited Edition will be limited to 1,966 units.
