But you don't necessarily have to shell out the cash: Over the summer, there was a free Microsoft upgrade offer that worked (it still might). How to download Windows 10 for free

Here's how to get Windows 10 for free, if you're currently running a licensed and activated copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro: 

1. Go to the Download Windows 10 website. 

2. Under Create Windows 10 installation media, click Download tool now and Run

3. Choose Upgrade this PC now, assuming this is the only PC you're upgrading. (If you're upgrading a different machine, choose Create installation media for another PC, and save the installation files.)

4. Follow the prompts. 

5. When the upgrade is complete, go to Settings Update & Security > Activation, and you should see a digital license for Windows 10.

a. There's no guarantee whatsoever that all of these will run under Win 10.
Each could be investigated for compatibility reports on the internet, but you might not find useful info on all.

Games can be particularly awkward and might need special patches.

Searches may still find some installers.

b. 'Known' Incompatible programs may be removed when upgrading.

c. When attempting the upgrade, take the above precautions esp. disk imaging- anything can and may go wrong.

d. Ensure you have at least 30Gb free on C: and uninstall any security software (likely to be obsolete).

e. Remove or disconnect all disks other than the system disk.

f. Check the disk before attempting the upgrade.

g. Check reports of that particular PC running Win 10.

h. Has Win 10 been offered via Windows Update? If not, suggests not deemed compatible with Win 10, or WU is not running.
