The 2016 All-Japan Rugby Football Championship (日本ラグビーフットボール選手権大会 Nihon Ragubi-Futtobo-ru Senshuken Taikai) took place as a one-off final match between Panasonic Wild Knights and Teikyo University at the Chichibunomiya Stadium in Tokyo on 31 January 2016. Panasonic won the match by 49–59. The abbreviated format was chosen due to the busy schedule for Japanese Rugby which included the 2015 Rugby World Cup as well as Asian qualification for the 2016 Olympics and the introduction of a Japanese Super Rugby team, the Sunwolves.

The JRFU resulted from a merger between the Kanto Rugby Football Union (launched in 1924) and the Seibu Rugby Football Union (established in 1925), the two entities running the game in eastern and western Japan

Rugby has been thriving in Japan for over a century and the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) has been leading this Game in supporting the core values of Rugby

Two of the world’s major sporting events will be taking place in Japan over the next 4 years: The Rugby World Cup (RWC) which shall be held in 2019, and the Summer Olympics, which will again feature Rugby 7s, in Tokyo in 2020.
