Definitely a mature wine, slightly funky with hints of lanolin and spice, but it's nicely mellowed and integrated with red fruits and spicy undertones, yet still fresh and lively. Drinking nicely at present.

Bill & Sibylla Moffitt who own Dry Gully live and maintain the vineyard. Sibylla grew up here as a child and has many memories of how it used to be, gold mining, dredges and fruit trees. The vineyard was planted in 1991 and is predominately Pinot Noir, producing a consistently charming and elegant wine, acknowledged internationally for it quality.

For New Zealand the 2011 vintage is best remembered for the devastating earthquake that ripped through Christchurch, destroying lives and injuring thousands. Although the vintage itself was mostly unscathed, the natural disaster cast a looming shadow over the year.

Bright light purple colour under light. Clean fresh Pinot nose. Lovely clean simple fruit with a savoury forest floor character, nicely balanced with a dry tannin finish. Enjoyed with pasta and traditional Italian tomato sauce on the West Cost.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most popular red wines. It's made from black-skinned grapes that thrive in a narrow spectrum of cooler climates. It's also notoriously difficult to grow. When done right, it produces lighter-bodied wines of elegance, complexity and longevity.

Why do some people not like Pinot Noir?

It's not an easy grape to pin down. Pinot Noir is said to be good at expressing terroir, so the taste varies a lot depending on where it comes from. Also it's an old variety and genetically unstable, so the grapes don't always turn out how you expect.

Pinot Noir is generally a dry wine. The process of fermentation typically goes uninterrupted to ensure the sugar in the grapes fully converts to alcohol, resulting in a drier wine with a lower sugar content. Pinot Noir is almost always a dry wine and tends to be medium-bodied with low tannins and palpable acidity.

Why is Pinot Noir so good?

First of all, this noble red variety from France's Burgundy region makes an intensely flavored, complex, high acid wine with incredible longevity. As the climate gets warmer, the fruit becomes riper and more obvious, and the acid softens a bit. The net result in any case is a wine that will not overpower your meal.
