Can you be a girl in Harvest Moon?

The Harvest Goddess

Once you know their likes and dislikes, you have to court them and get their heart levels higher. In order to get the girl to marry you, you must fufill all the the marriage requirements:

Expand Your House and Purchase the Big Bed - Before you can wed, you have to hire Gotz to upgrade your house twice. Also keep an eye on the TV Shopping channel on Saturdays. After you buy everything available and have your house as large as it can go, the Big Bed will be for sale for a price of 10,000 G.

Red Heart - When you talk to each girl (except for the Goddess) you can see how affectionate she is towards you by the color of the heart that appears on her portrait. When you first start the game all of the girls will be at a Black heart level because they don't know you very well. The more you talk to them, the better they get to know you. You can also give them gifts to help raise their love levels. Each girl likes different kinds of gifts and you can even gift-wrap them at Jeff's store before you give them out. A wrapped gift will give you better results then just giving the girl a gift with no pretty paper on it.

Heart Colors: Black -> Purple -> Blue -> Green -> Yellow -> Orange -> Red

Buy the Blue Feather - When any girl you are courting reaches an Orange heart color, the Blue Feather will be for sale at Jeff's store. You can use the feather as a marriage proposal item when the girl you're after reaches the Red heart level. When you think she's ready, just equip the Blue Feather and press the B button. She'll accept your feather, visit your farmhouse, and then you two can wed 7 days later.

You MUST have an empty slot in your rucksack before you can buy the Blue Feather.

See all 4 Heart Events - You must activate her four heart events before she'll accept the Blue Feather. The heart events can trigger after you reached the black, purple, blue, and orange heart colors. The events also aren't restricted to happening only at that color; you can still see the black event even if her heart color is yellow.

That's pretty much it though. If you need anymore help, there should be threads containing this information at the Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town: Index.

Can you be a girl in Harvest Moon?
I miss this.

There are a couple of HM versions where the player is a girl, but they've never been released in the West.

Part of it probably has to do with the success of a series. Any good businessman is reluctant to mess with a "winning" formula, and the first games started with a guy as the main character.

Another reason may be because of the target audience. You will find most guys prefer playing male characters, especially if there are supposed to be relationships involved in the game. Girls on the other hand don't seem to mind so much playing a male role, probably because they've grown to expect it. Female lead characters are a relatively new phenomenon in video games.

  • How Story of Seasons Improved Harvest Moon's Marriage System

Story of Seasons has improved the marriage mechanics of Harvest Moon, making it a better, more inclusive and more enjoyable game for modern players.

Story of Seasons Marriage Options Better Than Harvest Moon

Farming virtual crops in games like Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon is a relaxing way to get away from the struggles of day-to-day life. Fans who enjoy these slice-of-life farming simulators can build homes, care for livestock like chickens and cows, and engage in digital romance with the marriage candidates of the towns they settled in. However, Harvest Moon's marriage system was very different before the series rebranded to Story of Seasons after splitting with Natsume, restricting gameplay options and who players could select as the protagonist of each game.

When the first Harvest Moon game released for the SNES in 1996, players could only play as the male protagonist, Pete. This was also the case for many other games, like Harvest Moon 64, Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town and Harvest Moon DS. The first time a player could select a female protagonist was in Harvest Moon GB, and, unfortunately, the number of other early Harvest Moon games that included a playable female character was slim.

Even in titles that allowed it, though, playing as a female character came with limitations. In games like Harvest Moon GBC 3 and Harvest Moon: Boy & Girl, if a player chose to play as a girl, they would be in for an unfortunate surprise when they selected a bachelor and get married. While male characters could keep tending their farms and raising a family after marriage, the female character route abruptly ended when she got married. This created a situation where playing as a female character cut a large chunk of the game out, unfairly punishing players for their choice. Each route was even described differently, with Harvest Moon: Boy & Girl's boy characters on a path to fulfill their "Destiny," while girls were subject to their "Fate" instead.

Why Story Of Seasons Inclusivity Is A Good Step Forward

Harvest Moon Story of Seasons Marriage

Thankfully, modern games haven't continued the gender biases that could potentially frustrate fans wanting to enjoy farming and getting married. More recent Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons titles have been well balanced and inclusive in both protagonist routes. The series' handling of diversity, in general, has taken big leaps. Story of Seasons developers removed gender locks on specific appearances and clothing and added LGBTQA marriage options in the remake of Friends of Mineral Town and the upcoming Pioneers of Olive Town. These updates to gameplay have helped keep new titles relevant, as well as acknowledging the wider fan base that enjoys them.

Developer Marvelous has also updated and diversified the personalities and backgrounds of the Story of Seasons marriage candidates players can engage with, bringing in cultures from around the world and translating them into the region for the game. This made Trio of Towns particularly delightful for fans, as it pulled three vastly different cultures into one game. Because of these much-needed changes, Story of Seasons has been able to grow and change with Harvest Moonfans over the decades, allowing players both new and old to enjoy a remote farming escape.
