National life expectancy estimates are calculated using period (current) life tables. Life tables are used to measure mortality, survivorship, and the life expectancy of a population at varying ages. Period life tables estimate how many more years a group of people who are currently at a particular age – any age from birth to 100 or more – can expect to live if the mortality patterns in a given year remain the same over the rest of their lives. Life tables can also be used to
compare how life expectancy has improved or declined over time. National-level life tables are released annually, as well as every 10 years (decennially) around the U.S. population census. A period life table is based on the mortality experience of a population during a relatively short period of time. Here we present the 2019 period life table for the Social Security area population, as used in the 2022 Trustees Report (TR). For this table, the period life expectancy at a given age is the average remaining number of years expected prior to death for a person at
that exact age, born on January 1, using the mortality rates for 2019 over the course of his or her remaining life. This life table is available for certain other years. Period Life Table, 2019, as used in the 2022 Trustees Report

Is there a difference between life expectancy and life expectancy at birth?
Not exactly. The statistic “Life expectancy at birth” actually refers to the average number of years a newborn is expected to live if mortality patterns at the time of its birth remain constant in the future.
What is an example of life expectancy?
Life expectancy is the median age at death for a particular population group. For example, if a group of people have a life expectancy at birth of 70 years, half died before 70 and half survived beyond this age. Note that life expectancies are also determined for each age group, usually in 10-year increments.
What is called Life expectancy at birth?
Definition: The average number of years that a newborn could expect to live, if he or she were to pass through life exposed to the sex- and age-specific death rates prevailing at the time of his or her birth, for a specific year, in a given country, territory, or geographic area.
