The BMW Z4 is a popular choice among car shoppers looking for a modern two-door convertible. With the reveal of a likely facelift on the horizon, the 2023 BMW Z4 could satisfy BMW fans and convertible aficionados alike. Here is what we know so far about the upcoming 2023 BMW Z4 and its updates.

Will there be a 2023 BMW Z4?

BMW has already announced that not only will there be a 2023 BMW Z4, but it will also receive a bit of styling update. According to Edmunds, BMW will likely reveal the vehicle’s updates by this year’s fourth quarter (Q4). Following updates, it is unclear how long the Z4 will run before being discontinued or updated again.

However, the sales figures are not on the upcoming Z4’s side. With the growing popularity of EVs, SUVs, and crossovers, small, stylish roadsters appeal to a dwindling customer base. So if the Z4 doesn’t make BMW’s list for electrification, this could be one of the last model years.

How much is a 2023 BMW Z4?

The 2023 BMW Z4 will likely cost around $51,500, depending on trim levels, fees, and final manufacturer details. That seems reasonable given the average starting costs of the 2021 and 2022 model years. According to Car and Driver, the 2022 model year has a starting price of $50,895, and the 2021 had a starting price of around $50,695.

What will be different about the next model year?

The 2023 BMW Z4 will likely receive styling updates to distinguish itself from the 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 model years. Based on recent spy photos, the new Z4 seems to retain much of the same lighting characteristics as the previous model years. However, it does appear to have a slightly re-sculpted lower-front fascia.

Furthermore, Edmunds reports that BMW doesn’t have enough sales incentive to make more updates to the Z4. That means the upcoming car will be quite similar to the 2022 model year. Still, BMW announced that the new car will get a new 19-inch wheel option as well as three new color options: Thundernight metallic, Portimao Blue metallic, and Skyscraper Gray metallic.

When will the 2023 BMW Z4 come out?

Given that BMW announced that it won’t reveal the specifics of the next model year until Q4 2022, it is unlikely that the 2023 will go on sale this year. Instead, car shoppers interested in the 2023 BMW Z4 will have to wait until the first part of next year at the earliest.

Will the Z4 have a hardtop?

The BMW Z4 hasn’t had a hardtop option since the previous design before 2019. The previous hardtop models incorporated a folding metal roof, not unlike the Mercedes-Benz SL. However, the 2019 and newer Z4 are only available as a soft-top convertible. It is unlikely that the 2023 BMW Z4 will be any different.

However, not all is lost for Z4 fans who want a coupe. If you’re OK with ditching the BMW badge, the Toyota Supra GR is a sister car to the Z4. The Supra features much of the BMW Z4’s platform but in a sportier hard-top format.

Will there be a manual Z4?

Despite the smaller changes and the incipient Toyota GR Supra manual option, the 2023 BMW Z4 goes without a manual transmission. Instead, the BMW convertible will make do with an automatic transmission. The news comes as something of a surprise following the sibling Supra’s shiftable option. Is BMW going to discontinue the Z4?

The car was available for sale in March 2019. On March 11th, 2022, Magna Steyr halted production of the BMW Z4 (along with the 5-Series) for two weeks due to the lack of components since the ongoing 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine event.By 2024 the Z4 will end production, being the last Z-car in the BMW Z-series.
