Despite the challenges of being so large and so global, Allen & Overy has established itself domestically as a great place for associates to work. Recruiting occurs at top law schools and schools local to specific offices, but the firm emphasizes associates who have international experience, have an interest in cross-border work, and are entrepreneurial. Employees are sociable and supportive, collegial and caring, and everyone is treated as an integral part of the team. Partners engage easily and willingly with associates, and are invested in associate development. The firm does training particularly well, highlighted by a week-long course in London for second years and guidance from senior attorneys at every turn. Laterals integrate well through everything from worldwide practice group retreats to smaller-group mentor programs. Associates get substantive work early, including client interaction and opportunities to push for more significant assignments. Partners and work allocation coordinators help distribute projects equitably. Allen & Overy imposes a billable hour target, not a requirement, which lessens stress but raises questions about what threshold is needed to earn a bonus. Compensation matches the market, and firm tech is exceptional, including AI and contract generation programs. Wellness initiatives are basic but satisfactory, and the firm strongly encourages pro bono work, with hours counting toward the billable target. The firm has improved diversity efforts, most notably in the areas of gender and LGBTQ+, but needs to do better with racial diversity. Promotion to counsel positions might be more realistic than making partner, though partnership is attainable, and external options to go in-house or to financial institutions or global organizations are plentiful.
