VESTAL, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (7-6-3, 4-2-1 AE) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats (8-5-1, 5-1-1 AE) in a 5-4 thriller on Sunday afternoon.

Graduate student Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) scored twice on five shots on goal to lead the River Hawks in Sunday's loss. Sophomore Ioanna Papatheodorou (Nea Erithraia, Greece) scored her 10th goal of the season and junior Calliste Brookshire scored her seventh of the season. Redshirt junior Taylor Burgess (Mendon, Mass.) made four saves in goal for UMass Lowell.

"I think we had a good start; we scored a goal and had another chance early on. I think tactically, both teams were ready to go tried to execute at a high level," said head coach Mira Novak. "We got caught a few times in terms of our individual defending, but I thought we were the better team for a lot of the first half."

Despite the result, Novak was pleased with the team's resiliency and fight throughout the game. "I'm happy with how the team fought back, it wasn't easy," added Novak. "Everybody knew what was at stake today and it was a high-octane game. Credit to Binghamton, they have a great team with a lot of offensive threats."

The first half was a back-and-forth offensive battle that saw five goals in less than 30 minutes. UMass Lowell got off to a great start, creating two chances on goal in the opening four minutes of the game. Ioanna Papatheodorou scored her 10th goal of the season in the 5th minute after spinning the Binghamton defense and calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner. The Bearcats answered with two goals in three minutes to take a 2-1 lead.

Following the goal, the River Hawks intensity picked up, building from the back and through the midfield. Emily Nelson and senior Julia Edholm (Stockholm, Sweden) had space to work in the middle of the field, looking to find Papatheodorou in behind the defense. In the 22nd minute, graduate student Dunja Mostarac (Belgrade, Serbia) had a close-range effort saved following a corner kick and the rebound was cleared away.

An equalizer came in the 27th minute as Emily Nelson scored her third goal in three games to bring the River Hawks level. Papatheodorou battled for space before switching the ball to Chloe Layne. The junior's cross from the right side of the field found Nelson open in the box and the graduate student fired the shot into the top corner to tie the game at 2-2.

Binghamton answered back once again just a minute later as Olivia McKnight's left-footed shot found the bottom corner of the goal to put the hosts back in front by a goal. Julia Edholm had a chance in the 38th minute but saw her diving header saved. Binghamton nearly went ahead by two just before the break as Olivia McKnight's shot went inches wide of the post. The hosts took a 3-2 lead into the half. Taylor Burgess made four first half saves for the River Hawks.

Kaitlyn Williams took over in goal for the Bearcats as the second half began. Binghamton doubled the lead early as Olivia McKnight completed the hat trick just two minutes into the second half, firing a right-footed shot into the bottom corner. Emily Nelson tallied the first shot of the half for the River Hawks in the 52nd minute, a comfortable save by Williams.

There were few chances for either side over the next 15 minutes as the physicality of the game increased. Both teams were battling hard and not shying away from challenges. The River Hawks built some offensive pressure in the final 25 minutes and earned back-to-back corners that led to a third goal. Emily Nelson scored her second of the game in the 70th minute, finishing off a corner kick from Chloe Layne to bring the River Hawks within a goal with 20 minutes to play.

The Bearcats were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute and Lexi Vegoda converted from the spot to put the hosts back in front by two. UMass Lowell responded in the 78th minute after Calliste Brookshire scored a brilliant free kick from just outside the box to make it a 5-4 game. Julia Edholm had a chance in the 84th minute, but Williams made a great save to push the ball over the crossbar. UMass Lowell could find one more strike to tie the game and fell 5-4 to the Bearcats.

Up next, the River Hawks close the regular season against league-leaders New Hampshire on Thursday, October 27. "So, Thursday, I think it's pretty clear, if we want to finish in the top two, we have to win," added Novak. "Everything is in our hands and a win is our goal. They're a talented group [New Hampshire], one of the best teams in the league and there is a lot at stake, and we'll try to come away with the three points."

UMass Lowell will celebrate the seniors and fifth-year players prior to a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against the Wildcats.
